A Free Church App for Cameroon: French, MTN MoMo Giving and Free Bibles

What SoapBox can do for a church in Cameroon today: MTN MoMo giving to your own merchant code, the app in French or English, and free French Bibles.

Alan Safahi

If you lead a church in Cameroon, you already know what a church app has to get right. Your members live in French, in English, and often in a mix of both. Many of them give with mobile money rather than a card. Data costs real money. And some of the people in your congregation do not own a smartphone at all. This article walks through what SoapBox can do for a church in Cameroon today, and where the edges are, so you can decide with accurate information.

Key takeaways

  • Members can give with MTN MoMo straight to your church's own six-digit MoMo Pay merchant code. SoapBox takes no platform fee on donations, and MTN's own mobile money fees still apply.
  • The app runs in French or English, and each member chooses their own.
  • The Bible reader includes French Bibles and many English translations, free.
  • Your church starts free, for up to a hundred members.
  • Members with a basic phone can be kept in your People list, with no app and no account.

MTN MoMo giving, straight to your church

Giving is usually the first question a pastor asks, so here is exactly how it works. Your members can give with MTN MoMo, straight to your church's own six-digit MoMo Pay merchant code. SoapBox fills in the payment for them. Your member confirms it with their own PIN, then taps to log their gift in the app.

The gift goes straight to your church. SoapBox takes no platform fee on donations, and MTN's own mobile money fees still apply. SoapBox never holds the money. That last point matters: your church's merchant code belongs to your church, and nothing sits in a SoapBox account in between.

It is worth being plain about the limits too. Giving works with MTN MoMo. Orange Money is not supported through SoapBox, and card giving is not available for churches in Cameroon today. If most of your members give through another wallet, weigh that before you switch. The amounts and merchant code you see in the videos are examples, not a real church's details.

In French or English, and the Bible in both

The app runs in French or English, and each member chooses their own. A member who prefers French and a member who prefers English can sit in the same church and each see the app in the language they choose. SoapBox does not yet offer the app in Pidgin, Ewondo, Duala or Fulfulde.

The Bible reader has French Bibles and many English translations, free. ORA, SoapBox's study assistant, answers in French as well. ORA is a research aid for study, not a pastor: it helps a member look into a passage, and it does not replace you, your sermons or your counsel.

Free to start, and easy to share

Your church starts free, for up to a hundred members. You do not need a budget meeting to try it. Share your invite code on WhatsApp, Facebook, by text message or email, straight from the app, and members join your church community with the code.

If your church outgrows the free plan, paid plans are discounted for churches in Cameroon. You can see the options on the plans page when you get there; there is no need to decide now.

A simple way to begin is to register your church on the web app or in the app, share your invite code with the members who already have smartphones, and add the rest of your congregation to People. You can see how it feels with a small group before you ask the whole church to change how it gives or how it hears from you.

For members without a smartphone

Many congregations include people with a basic phone: older members, and anyone without a smartphone or without internet. SoapBox has a place for them too. Add them to your People list with a name and a mobile number. They need no app and no account.

To reach them by SMS, export your People list with phone numbers from Android, iPhone or the web app, and send through your church's own SMS provider. SoapBox does not send the SMS itself.

Built for the cost of data

Staying connected should not mean a bigger data bill for the people you serve.

Turn on Data-Light Mode, and on mobile data, photos inside posts wait until you tap them. Chapters you have already read stay on your phone. For the church itself, visitors who check in at the door land in Visitor Follow-up, so a first-time guest is not forgotten. You can also publish a free web page for your church. The app is on the App Store and Google Play, and you can open app.soapboxsuperapp.com in any browser to register your church.

See it for yourself

The videos show the real screens with invented names, so you can follow each step, from the MoMo payment to the Bible reader, before anyone in your church installs anything. The French video is narrated in French, with the app shown in French, if you want to share it with members who prefer it.

Everything above is on one page for Cameroon: SoapBox in Cameroon. More short how-to videos for pastors and members are collected at soapboxsuperapp.com/tutorials. If something here does not match what you see in the app, tell us. We would rather correct this page than have you rely on a promise we cannot keep.

Explore faith at your own pace.

SoapBox is a free Bible app with a live prayer wall, daily devotionals, and ORA, an AI study assistant that answers questions about faith with grounded, Scripture-cited responses, judgment-free, in your language.
