A Free Church App for Kenya: Swahili, M-Pesa Giving and Free Bibles

What SoapBox can do for a church in Kenya today: M-Pesa giving to your own Till Number, the app in Swahili or English, and free Swahili and Dholuo Bibles.

Alan Safahi

If you lead a church in Kenya, you already know what a church app has to get right. Your members pay for mobile data out of their own pockets. They give with M-Pesa, not with a card. They read and pray in Swahili, in English, and sometimes in a mother tongue such as Dholuo. And some of the people in your congregation do not have a smartphone at all. This article walks through what SoapBox can do for a church in Kenya today, and where the edges are, so you can decide with accurate information.

Key takeaways

  • Members can give with M-Pesa straight to your church's own Till Number. SoapBox takes no platform fee on donations, and Safaricom's own M-Pesa fees still apply.
  • The app runs in English or Swahili, and each member chooses their own.
  • The Bible reader includes the Swahili Neno Bible and the Dholuo Bible, free.
  • Your church starts free, for up to a hundred members.
  • Members with a basic phone can be kept in your People list, with no app and no account.

M-Pesa giving, straight to your church's Till

Giving is the first question most Kenyan pastors ask, so here is exactly how it works. Your members can give with M-Pesa, straight to your church's own Till Number. SoapBox opens the M-Pesa menu and shows the steps: Lipa na M-Pesa, then Buy Goods and Services, your Till Number and the amount. Your member confirms with their own M-Pesa PIN, then taps to log their gift.

The gift goes straight to your church's own M-Pesa till. SoapBox takes no platform fee on donations, and Safaricom's own M-Pesa fees still apply. SoapBox never holds the money. That last point matters: the church's till is the church's till, and nothing sits in a SoapBox account in between.

It is worth being plain about the limits too. Giving works with your church's own M-Pesa Till Number, not with a Paybill. Pochi la Biashara and Airtel Money are not supported through SoapBox. And card giving is not available for churches in Kenya today. If your church collects on a Paybill, this is something to weigh before you switch.

In Swahili, English and Dholuo

The app runs in English or Swahili, and each member chooses their own. A grandmother who prefers Swahili and a university student who prefers English can sit in the same church and each see the app in the language they choose.

The Bible reader has the Swahili Neno Bible and the Dholuo Bible, free, with many English translations. ORA, SoapBox's study assistant, answers Bible questions in Swahili too. ORA is a research aid for study, not a pastor: it helps a member look into a passage, and it does not replace you, your sermons or your counsel.

Free to start, and easy to share

Your church starts free, for up to a hundred members. You do not need a budget meeting to try it. Share your invite code on WhatsApp, Facebook, by text message or email, straight from the app, and members join your church community with the code.

If your church outgrows the free plan, paid plans are discounted for churches in Kenya. You can see the options on the plans page when you get there; there is no need to decide now.

A simple way to begin is to register your church on the web app or in the app, share your invite code with the members who already have smartphones, and add the rest of your congregation to People. You can see how it feels with a small group before you ask the whole church to change how it gives or how it hears from you.

For members without a smartphone

Many congregations include people with a basic phone: older members, and anyone without a smartphone or data. SoapBox has a place for them too. Add them to your People list with a name and a mobile number. They need no app and no account.

To reach them by SMS, export your People list with phone numbers from Android, iPhone or the web app, and send through your church's own SMS provider. SoapBox does not send the SMS itself.

Built for the cost of data

Staying connected should not mean a bigger data bill for the people you serve.

Data costs money, and a church app should respect that. Turn on Data-Light Mode, and photos inside posts wait until you tap them. That is always the case on Android and the web app, and on iPhone whenever you are on mobile data. Bible chapters you have already opened stay readable on your phone, even offline.

For the church itself, visitors who check in at the door land in Visitor Follow-up, so a first-time guest is not forgotten by Tuesday. You can also publish a free web page for your church. The app is on the App Store and Google Play, and you can open app.soapboxsuperapp.com in any browser to register your church.

See it for yourself

The videos show the real screens with invented names, so you can follow each step, from the M-Pesa menu to the Bible reader, before anyone in your church installs anything.

Everything above is on one page for Kenya: SoapBox in Kenya. More short how-to videos for pastors and members are collected at soapboxsuperapp.com/tutorials. If something here does not match what you see in the app, tell us. We would rather correct this page than have you rely on a promise we cannot keep.

Explore faith at your own pace.

SoapBox is a free Bible app with a live prayer wall, daily devotionals, and ORA, an AI study assistant that answers questions about faith with grounded, Scripture-cited responses, judgment-free, in your language.
